Marwan Kheireddine: A Lebanese Banker Who Took on the World

In the early 1990s, Marwan Kheireddine was a young banker in Beirut. After his first college year, he was looking for ways to contribute to the future of his city. Marwan Kheireddine decided that he wanted to make a difference in the world, so he founded One World Bank.

Kheireddine wanted to create a bank to help the world’s poorest countries. He was inspired by the Bank of North Dakota, established in 1919, and had been making loans to small businesses since its inception. He believed that the Bank of North Dakota was a model for a new approach to international banking.

One World Bank is an international organization with branches in more than 50 countries worldwide, with headquarters in Washington D.C. The organization is 100% owned by its members and employs over 2,000 people full-time. It has made over $3 billion worth of loans and has helped more than 20 million people worldwide.

From 2000 to 2004, he was Regional President for Africa at HSBC bank Limited. In 2006, he became Group Chief Operating Officer (COO) at HSBC bank Ltd., where his responsibilities included leading all operations outside Europe and responsibility for the development of new businesses across five global regions: the Asia Pacific, Americas, Eastern Europe & Russia/Central Asia, Middle East & North Africa and South America/Latin America.

He also led a review of our business model, which implemented several strategic changes within the HSBC group. That includes its divestment from Alfa Laval SA; organizational rationalization; reduction in headcount by 10 percent; optimization of resources; appointment of new headship teams across geographies with a solid focus on customer experience orientation; and the launch of new products.

Marwan Kheireddine is also leading the creation of a new global financial services company, which will be based on a partnership with the former chief executive of Standard Chartered Bank, Peter Sands. The bank is to be headquartered in London and operates across the world.
